CBS Ennis
Bunscoil na mBráither Críostaí is situated in Ennis Co. Clare on the west coast of Ireland. Ennis is the principal town in County Clare and has a population of over 20,000 people. It is ideally situated a mere 15 minutes from Shannon airport and between Limerick City and the famous Burren region of North Clare which is home to the world famous Cliffs of Moher, the Ailwee Caves and Caherconnell Stone Fort.
The CBS have been serving the people of Ennis since 1827 and at this point the school has grown into a 3 stream co-educational facility with a total of 601 pupils. We have a burgeoning staff of 40 including ancillary staff and a wide variety of visiting teachers who provide expertise in many areas from P.E. to music to Speech and Drama.
Our school is a multi-denominational one with over 20 nationalities catered for. As a result the school has 2 dedicated language teachers who provide support for children who are new to these shores. In addition there is a language unit attached to the school which caters for children experiencing developmental difficulties in the area of language acquisition.
In entering into this project we endeavour to encourage our students to:
• recognise the value of games as media for communication with new cultures
• appreciate the importance of the oral tradition not only to Ireland but to europe as a whole
• simultaneously appreciate the importance of Irish culture and the value of European culture
• discover new languages
• gain rich cultural experiences through child centred interaction
• to enjoy new attractive lessons facilitated by cutting edge ICT
• to improve their communication skills
• to promote respect and tolerance
• to broaden their world view
We anticipate the project will lead to a deeper appreciation of both Irish and European culture among the school commnity. We see an excellent opportunity to broaden the scope of our education and to provide an improved level of social understanding among teachers parents and students alike. We hope that our partaking in the project will encourage our school community to grow to a greater understanding of the multi cultural tapestry which awaits them as they make there way through the modern world.
